The Vinyl Wall: Pieces of Eight

Wall Worthy because…
Styx was one of the first bands I got really into. I may or may not have re-staged the “Return to Paradise” show using Star Wars action figures as a 5 year old. I share the popular opinion that The Grand Illusion is their best album but I just couldn’t bring myself to put its bizarre cover on display. So I settled for this only slightly less weird painting of three old ladies that’s supposed to be an analogy for not overvaluing material possessions. Pieces of Eight is not a perfect record but there are some real gems that warrant a listener to dig deeper than just “Blue Collar Man” and “Renegade.”
My favorite song on the album is…
Queen of Spades.” Listen to the high note Dennis DeYoung wails on in the reprise of the first verse. Gives me chills every time.
